Goals

CYA–TECH was proposed based on established concepts of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and cyanobacterial biomineralization capabilities but was designed not only to expand the knowledge on those aspects. The main goals of the project are:

Develop a novel cutting–edge, use– and environmental–friendly CYAnobacteria- based consolidation TECHnology that will restore and preserve monumental and ornamental calcareous stones in a sustainable way.

Compared to the current chemical treatments, CYA–TECH will improve the consolidation performance while respecting the environment and the operators’ health.

Compared to the most advanced available biotechnology, CYA–TECH will permit a precision consolidation through physical switches, while sequestering anthropogenic CO2 (carbon dioxide) transformed into stable carbonates.

Improve our understanding of the organic and inorganic carbon fluxes in cyanobacteria, the carbonate mineralization process, the interplay between calcification and photosynthesis, and how this interaction may be influenced by climate.
