Impact
In line with the New European Bauhaus, CYA–TECH aims to provide the conservation of SH, strengthening physical protections for historical architecture and heritage sites threatened by weather, and fostering bio-based and circular solutions for the built environment outlined by the Council Resolution on the EU Work Plan for Culture 2023–2026. Besides stone conservation, the dual capture of CO2 during photosynthesis into an organic form (biomass) and an inorganic form (the precipitation of carbonate minerals), will lead to a better understanding of the carbon fluxes in cyanobacteria with several potential impacts for a wide range of applications and innovative biotechnologies. The project aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal supporting the development of a sustainable green bioeconomy, and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).

Overall, the way CH is preserved and enhanced is a major factor in defining Europe ́s identity, emphasising CH as a resource for promoting social cohesion, diversity and intercultural dialogue, sustainable and inclusive growth and well-being. Citizens, the scientific community and CH-experienced professionals will have access to the scientific evidence derived from CYA–TECH on the role of microorganisms on artworks, and the applicable solutions for SH’s survival for future generations.
